The history of the title of Mater Admirabalis:
Mater Admirabilis is a fresco of Our Blessed Mother located at the Convent of the Religious of the Sacred Heart in Rome. The original colors were not pleasing; therefore, the fresco was covered with a curtain. However, in 1846, Pope Pius IX visited the convent and asked to see what was behind the curtain. Upon the unveiling of the curtain, the colors of the fresco were miraculously transformed into lighter shades and hues. At the sight of the beautiful fresco, the Pope declared “Mater Admirabilis!” Thereafter, many miracles through the intercession of Mater Admirabilis took place, and the fresco is visited by pilgrims today.
Our Lady’s feast day under this title of Mater Admirabilis falls on October 20th, providentially also the feast day of Blessed James Kern, a Norbertine canon, who offered his life to God in atonement for the apostasy and schism of another priest.
